Windsurfing: Minster, Isle of Sheppy Wind Direction: NE'ly Wind Stength: F7 gusting 8 Surf / Sea State: Very Choppy Air Temperature: 8 Sea Temperature: 9 Weather: Misty Drizzle Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Well, I got out at Minster today, but it hardly qualifies as a session! I
barely got going - I just got blown off the water.
I arrived at 12:15, and at that point everyone was on 5.7s, so I followed
suit. Having rigged up, I got to the waterline thinking "hmm, is this
really 5.7 weather?". Five minutes later the wind had picked up
considerably and it definitely wasn't! I really couldn't hang on to that
much sail, and the board wouldn't stay on the water. Ten minutes of
struggling with that and I realised that it was going to be hopeless, so I
holed up in the van for a little while to see if it would back off, but it
just kept picking up. At the top of the shingle bank where the wind
accelerates, it was completely insane. I could barely open the van door,
and the van was being shaken like a rattle.
By this stage everyone was coming in and all the kiters were battling to
de-rig, whilst a few of the windsurfers re-rigged on tiny sails. I only had
a 4.7 as my smallest, which was too much. It was easily 4.0 weather. The
Sheppy sailing club weathercam confirmed that it was averaging 45mph and
gusting 55mph, with misty drizzle and a seriously choppy water state. So I
spectated for a while as 4 windsurfers did battle (didn't see a single
successful transition - everyone was just exploding at the end of wild high
speed blasts!), then drove home in my wetsuit - too cold to get changed in
that weather, so got changed in a hot shower back home instead!!
Oh well, at least I tried! I just hope the easter weekend comes up
trumps...
